As we approach the first anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, one of G.K. Chesterton’s most profound observations keeps coming to mind: “The true soldier,” Chesterton explained, “fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”
